Fursuit making is becoming more common within the furry fandom and even outside of it,
which is amazing, but it's always hard to know where to start.
A lot of the knowledge is centered around the US,
so as an European I have always looked for alternatives to American fur suppliers and materials,
both to avoid very high customs and because some products are different here.I am firmly against gatekeeping knowledge, so this site is a way to freely share it!Please keep in mind that I and most of the contributors live in Italy.
While the resources here should be valid for most other European countries,
shipping and availability could be different depending on your local laws.I am aware that there are countless other suppliers and materials out there,
and while we love to test new things, we'll always be lagging behind.
That said, this site archives only what we personally tested and approved as a material worth our (and your) time and money.
Feel free to contact me if you want to contribute as well!

Faux fur
When looking for fur to buy, you want more than just the correct colors.Fur that is dense and made with quality materials looks and feels much better to the touch,
and a good backing means the costume will not fall apart as easily (brush your fursuit!).
It's not cheap, but quality faux fur will both be easier to work with and make the finished product so much better.Remember, you usually get what you pay for, and really cheap "carnival" fur is almost always a net negative for your work.
Buying fur without paying attention to its quality will make your fursuits look old, dirty and gnarly in a matter of uses, not years.

Length: 5 cm
Listings
- Main (10 colors currently)
- Half-meter (10 colors)Zyfmptex sells wholesale to smaller chinese retailers, meaning that listings disappear or change whenever a seller runs out of stock and doesn't restock.
Soon after, another seller usually appears, selling the same fur with the same photos, color profiles and color codes.
When these two links will stop working, I suggest you search for "zyfmptex 5cm fur fox" in Google Images. Since sellers always use the same photos and color codes, they will appear again.
PROS
Voluminous and shiny
Can be shaved decently
CONS
Few colors (no blue/light blue shades)
Listings keep disappearing and you have to search for them again manually

Little choice for "unnatural" colors
Various types behave differently, always do a shaving test first

Minky
Orient Fashion

Has Minky, but also Mochi, Fleece, Neoprene and more!
PROS
Amazing quality
Great prices
Huge selection of various fabrics
Color charts available for every single type
CONS
Fairly expensive shipping if you're getting few things (€7 towards Italy, likely similar for EU).
The site's translation is kind of an issue, so if you have a chart from them, here's a recommendation: only use Google's automatic translation, as the site's own translation changes product names and codes, making it impossible to find specific products if you're using the chart's info.

Mochi

Neoprene
This lining is great for foam and expanding foam heads, as it keeps sweat and moisture away from the base.
It stops ventilation (countering the advantages of printed heads), but it doesn't retain heat.
Smooth to the touch and comfortable.Important: this section strictly refers to open-cell/techno neoprene (the one described above), not scuba neoprene (does the exact opposite of what you want).

Smooth, breathable, delicate.

Aliexpress Listings
- Black & White
- White & AvoryThe one problem with these is chasing the listings on Aliexpress, as they continue to disappear and pop out elsewhere with different names.
It's somehow easier to buy a tanktop made of this material than buy it by the meter. When searching for it, try to search all the names listed above for better results.
Cotton
Extremely cheap and very simple to find in any fabrics store, it comes in different types and weights.
~
Listings
None.
Just go and find some locally, you gotta make sure it's the nice type and listings rarely tell you that.
PROS
Cheap
Can be found in most textile shops
CONS
Terrible when used as lining (personal opinion shared by many)
Insulating materials retains heat, potentially to an unsafe level for the wearer
Absorbs moisture and sweat, which will build up and soak into the head's material. Will increase chance of smell and mold issues inside foam/casted foam heads
Texture of certain cotton types might be uncomfortable
Compared to other easily available options, it's just not worth it
3D Airmesh
Also known as 3D mesh fabric, this material is able to keep its shape while being extremely breathable. It's the perfect lining for ventilation holes, on both body suits (armpits) and heads (ear holes).
Some use it for the entire lining in their heads or just on the adjustable cushions/padding.
Can also be used to make padding bags for bodysuits (works with polyfill).

Aliexpress Listings

- Listing n2
- Listing n3There is no specific store for this material, on Aliexpress you can find it in different stores and different colors.Important: this material may feel abrasive to some people, if not even a nightmare for individuals with texture-related issues.
Make sure to test it first, especially if you plan to use it where there's skin contact!

FDM 3D Printers
This is intended as a general guide to the most common brands of Fused Deposition Modeling 3D printers.
It's an overview of each brand, with pros and cons plus a suggested model that fits a maker's need.
It's impossible to cover every brand and model properly,
but with this info, you should be able to make a more-educated guess on other models and less common brands.IMPORTANT
When talking about 3D printers for fursuit making,
it's important to understand which characteristics are "must have" or "nice to have".Size and materials are the main requirements and limiting factors for a fursuit maker.
Ideally, you want to get printers that can print fursuit heads in one piece,
so having around 30cm of print space in all 3 dimensions is what you should be looking for.
You can get by with using smaller printers and gluing parts together,
but it requires careful planning and slicing or you might make mistakes.Additionally, if you want to print in TPU,
you will need a direct drive extruder, which is an extruder placed on the print head itself
and the only one capable of printing TPU reliably.

Prusa
Store
- Prusa3D
- Printed Solid (US official reseller)European & open-source, at a price.Perfect for those makers who are not afraid to learn how a 3D printer works and how is made.
Experts will enjoy the well-documented tinkering side.Suggested model: Prusa Core One LNote: makers from the US must buy from Printed Solid avoid tariffs on printers and consumables.
PROS
Open-source software and firmware
Official slicer is PrusaSlicer (open-source, derived from Slicer)
Sturdy and reliable
Easy to repair and upgrade
Publicly available models to 3D print your own replacement parts.
Extremely good multi-language documentation with images
Very good official user support and community
Periodic releases of upgrade kits with new technologies and hardware fixes.
TPU support without modifications, just change a switch position
Fully automated calibration
Can be controlled via cloud, local network, or even completely offline. Mobile app available
Top quality filaments, if you are willing to pay
If you're willing to build it, the kits cost less than the plug-n-play versions.
Covered by the European consumer protection. They comply with open-source licenses and partecipate with the community
[Core One L] Compatible with two multimaterial system, classic MMU3 with filament swap, and soon to be released INDX toolchanger
CONS
Expensive
You may need to disassemble complex parts to repair them, but great documentation and support help a lot
[Core One L] 30x30x30cm should be enough to print a head in one piece, but there are bigger printers available
[Core One L] Air filtration is sold separately (use in a well-ventilated space or add €80 on top)
[Core One L] 1080p camera included, but no AI automation to prevent failures at the moment.

Bambu Lab
Store
- Bambu LabThe plug-n-play Chinese dice rollFor makers who want an easy-to-use house appliace.Suggested model: Bambu Lab H2S
PROS
Usually reliable
Cheap for what you get
Fully assembled and automated
Very easy to use and approachable
Multiple cameras and AI automation that should prevent failures (plenty of failures have made it to socials, so it's not 100% reliable)
Air filtration included
Good documentation with images
Mobile app available
[Bambu Lab H2S] Compatible with AMS multi-material system (very easy to use but wasteful)
[Bambu Lab H2S] 34x32x34cm of print space is more than enough
CONS
Official slicer is Bambu Studio (derived from PrusaSlicer, open-source not respected)
Almost everything is proprietary and makes you dependent on them for repairs
Numerous attempts to suppress the open-source community through unlawful legal action and the theft of open-source code, passing it as their own
Frequent attempts to trap their users into a closed ecosystem, where you are forced to use always-online software to control the printer
It is known some parts are not easily repairable by the user, so treat it as an appliance to send back if broken/malfunctioning
One of their models had multiple catastrophic fires over the years, casting doubt on their quality control. They have never officially acknowledged the problem, though they are replacing the printers with faulty parts if the user explicitly asks.
Multiple attempts to blame users for defective printers in order to avoid complying with the mandatory two-year warranty in Europe.
To print TPU, you need to disassemble and bypass the PTFE tubes
If you want a true multimaterial tool changer, it quickly becomes pricey.

ELEGOO
Store
- ELEGOOThe reliable Chinese for the farm of your dreamsFor the makers who are willing to assemble the printer, and those who want an army of printers without selling a kidney.Suggested models: Elegoo Neptune 4 Plus or Max
PROS
Open-source Klipper firmware (you'll be able to install custom firmwares after these models are retired)
Official slicer is ElegooSlicer (open-source, derived from OrcaSlicer)
Very reliable compared to other Chinese brands
Insanely cheap, you can buy 3 or 4 of these for the price of a Prusa or a Bambu Lab. Best option if you want to start a farm
Good documentation with images
Has proprietary parts, but replacement are cheap and easy to find (universal parts)
Very simple tech (bed slinger) is easy to understand and maintain
Local network web control
[Suggested models] Direct drive for TPU included
[Neptune 4 Plus] 32x32x38cm or [Neptune 4 Max] 42x42x48cm print area is enough to print almost anything in one piece (potentially even digilegs)
CONS
No cameras or AI automation (gotta keep an eye on them)
Open body = no air filtration at all
No plug-n-play option, you have to assemble it
Calibration is manual (but it can be calibrated quite precisely!)
Hard to disassemble for repairs
Some replacement parts are hard to find
Fans are very loud
Hot-end block has plastic/fragile parts. If they break you will have to change the entire hot-end

Snapmaker
Store
- SnapmakerThe open-source AmericanFor the makers who need an affordable multi-material toolchangerSuggested model: Snapmaker U1
PROS
Open-source Klipper firmware (you'll be able to install custom firmwares after these models are retired)
Official slicer is Snapmaker Orca (open-source, derived from Orca Slicer)
Cheapest toolchanger around at the moment
Fully assembled and automated
Ability to print multiple materials at the same time, with maximum efficiency and speed (e.g. TPU parts with PLA supports)
Ability to quickly swap between fast printer nozzles and high-precision ones
Direct drive extruder with motorized loader for pushing TPU into the PTFE tubes
Included camera and AI automation. Reviewers report it as working, but who knows.
Mobile app available
Pledge to collaborate and participate with the open-source community, while respecting software licences
CONS
27x27x27cm of print area, bare minimum for a fursuit maker. If you don't make small heads, you will need to print them in multiple pieces and glue them together.
Relatively recent model, no one know how it will hold on the long run
Semi open body with no air filtration available
Need to rely on them for most of the spare parts, but they are affordable.

Printer Filament
This is a summary of what filaments are commonly used in fursuit making.
| Material | Description | Pros/Cons |
|---|---|---|
| PLA | standard PLA filament, easy to print | it's plastic: sturdy, heavy, with many use cases |
| PLA+ | enhanced version of standard PLA | additives to improve physical properties |
| PLA "meta" | melts at a lower temperature than standard PLA | can print at lower temperature or at higher speeds |
| PETG | material with a high resistance to impacts and stress + higher melting point | harder to print without a well-tuned printer, costs more |
| TPU | most common flexible filament, comes in various hardness levels | a direct drive extruder is required. slow print speed = long print time. |
| Foam TPU / TPU Air | TPU with variable hardness depending on printing temperature | amazingly versatile material, but very hard to print and tune. requires testing for desired results |
| PEBA | better than TPU: faster to print, bouncy, lightweight, elastic, resistant to cold | a new great material, but currently quite expensive and requires proper ventilation systems due to serious health concerns |
IMPORTANT NOTE
Certain types of filaments require extra care!
- Abrasive filaments (glow-in-the-dark, those containing metallic materials, etc) cannot be printed without a hardened steel nozzle,
as they will quickly wear down regular nozzles, as well as your printer in general over time.
- Filaments containing wooden fibers may clog your nozzle if it's too small.
- TPU should be printed using large-enough nozzles in order to avoid the filament getting jammed in the extruder gear.[A tutorial about what material is better for fursuit bases will be posted soon!]

Clippers
This is about clippers that are specifically fit for shaving fur.As a general note, clippers are usually the more powerful tools designed to shave off a lot of fur at once,
while trimmers are for detailing and touch-ups.IMPORTANT
Tools designed for hairstyling or beard trimmers are completely useless to shave faux fur and might get damaged.
You need tools designed for pet grooming.
oneisall
Basic Dog Clipper
Store
- AmazonThe best Oneisall's basic model with ceramic blade. Nothing amazing to say about it, but nothing bad either.
PROS
Economic
Lightweight
Replacement parts are cheap and easy to find, even from third parties
Cleans easily
Very good entry level clipper
CONS
Battery begins to die after two years at most
They don't have replacement parts for the battery compartment in spite of it being removable
You need to buy another 3.7V battery unit and solder it to the compartment, meaning you're screwed if you can't do it
It can't shave denser furs, like beaver

Mid-tier Dog Clipper
Store
- AmazonDO NOT BUY IT unless you get it from Amazon.
You will need to send it back periodically.
PROS
Can shave even beaver fur like butter
Often on sale for €40 instead of €65
CONS
Extremely heavy on your wrist
The metal blades are annoying to set correctly
Metal wears down twice as fast compared to ceramic, meaning that you'll have to swap the blades out much more frequently
In spite of being clearly made with replacement parts in mind, they do not exist. You get one blade and that's it
The previous points make it quite literally a disposable clipper.
The (questionable) silver lining is that the company itself wants you to contact them in order to request a new one when the clipper doesn't work well anymore

Cool Add-on
Store
- AmazonClipper with a vacuum included.
Interesting if you don't want to die of microplastics.
PROS
Greatly reduces the amount of flying fur during shaving (not an excuse not to wear a respirator)
Perfect as-is for the first shaving pass
Has many accessories for brushing and clean-up
It's also a very good mini-vacuum cleaner
Sometimes it's on sale for €70
Replacement blades are cheap and easy to find, even from third parties
CONS
Absolutely DO NOT use it as your main clipper. It handles the first rough pass like a champ, but detailing work has to be done with other clipper
Can be used only on plain surfaces, as it doesn't handle curves well
Its BPM is not enough for a smooth and uniform shaving, no matter what blade or accessory you use. It will always be mediocre at best
Blade is fixed, you can't use spacers nor set it to how many mm you want
Too expensive unless you shave a lot of fur, I would not recommend it for beginners/casual makers

Professional Dog Clipper
Fenice
Aliexpress
- Store (main)
- Fenice P300 (my current clipper)The store also has other models, but I only tested the P300.
Mid tier
PROS
All parts (clipper and blades) arrive pre-lubrificated
Replacement parts can be found easily on Aliexpress
Compatible with ceramic blades from Oneisall and others
USB-C charging
CONS
Nothing so far! (I'll update if something pops up)

Protections
These are the things we always recommend to new makers (and each other).
Important: we're not medical professionals, so these should be taken as suggestions.
Masks & Respirators
The MANDATORY lifesaverMust use when: shaving fur, sanding, using strong glues, doing anything that involves fumes or particulate matterOptional when: sanding small parts, working with foamWhy?
When you shave fur fibers (or work with any material in a destructive manner), you release a storm of airborne particles that are very easy to breathe in.
Even worse, faux fur is made of plastic, meaning those particles will be microplastics.Anything that entersyour lungs will stay in there forever and will likely cause a plethora of health issues going forward (such as groomer lung). To avoid that, you want at least a mask that can filter all the particles, and an even better one if you're working with strong glues or anything that can emit fumes.A dust mask will do in an emergency, but do look up covid masks as well and find one that fits your face properly.
Most common suggestions are PFF2, PFF33 and N95 masks. If you're prone to ear-related problems, wearing earplugs may help as well.

The cool upgrade to the humble maskA mask is good, but a respirator is even better and safer! Most of our contributors are a fan of [this respirator]( ANANAS ), but you can easily find even better ones both online and at local stores.

Ventilation
The thing you must never forget to doJust the basic stuff will go a long way: periodically open your windows and regularly clean up your room after shaving/working.Air purifiers in your workspace can help a great deal!
There are many models, from cheap to expensive, able to purify the air of small and bigger rooms, etc.
Sadly we can't help much, as you're gonna have to figure the best model for your needs out depending on your budget and workspace. Some A/C units also have specialized filters for air purification, but that depends on the model and it's pretty rare.Regardless, always remember to change the filters and never forget your mask!
Gloves
You wanna keep your hands healthyDifferent materials are better suited for different activities:
- Nitrile gloves are perfect for handling uncured resin or other toxic substances.
- Heatproof gloves are great for handling hot glue gun or a soldering iron, so that you can avoid burns.
- Cut-resistant gloves are made for using sharp tools safely.
- Latex gloves can be useful for handling non-toxic glues without getting it all on your fingers. Are gloves always needed?
Probably not.
Will you be very thankful you were wearing them "needlessly" when an accident actually happens?
Yes, oh yes you will.
Sometimes, a whole glove is objectively too much for the task at hand, but you might still want to partially protect your fingers while sewing!
Friction burns from the thread may be small, but your fingers will feel them eventually! These are some of our tested methods, pick the one more comfortable to you!
- Drawing tablet glove (choose the type and thickness)
- Finger support bands
- Finger braces (really terrible at their original job, but perfect for protecting your ring finger from the threat of thread!)
- Medical duct tape (buy it as large as possible)
Safety Goggles
You might want to keep your eyes healthyUse them when: shaving fur, sanding, using strong glues, doing anything that involves fumesThey're not as mandatory as other safety items on this page, but better safe than sorry. If you already wear glasses, they can be enough of a shield, but do pay extra attention if you're wearing contacts!

Miscellaneous
These are all the other tools you might need.
They're all very important, they just don't need a dedicated page.
Glues and Ashesives
Type: Hot Glue
Trusted Stores
- [x]( )blablablaGood for:

Type: B7000
Trusted Stores
- B-7000 in different sizes
- Secondary linkGood for: gluing magnets, small touch-upsThis glue is very easy to remove with the right method, so much it practically has an integrated Ctrl+Z button, even after years!
You can just break the glued pieces apart with the right amount of force and leverage, and after that you need a bit of alcohol to remove the residues.Best option we've found to glue magnets (NEVER use hot glue).
Also an effective method for reinforcing the weak edges of fur backing, just make a tiny hem and glue it down.

Type: Bicomponent Adhesives
Trusted Stores
- First Purchase
- ActionGood for: gluing together PLA piecesQuick trick: Before buying the cheaper one from Action, get the more expensive ones that include the little spatula and tray necessary to mix the two components.
The adhesive will not work on their specific type of plastic and you can reuse them indefinitely, as you can remove the dry adhesive with just a little leverage from a screwdriver. When you push out the two components, do pay attention that you're putting pressure equally on both sides: the proportion between the two components has to be at least 40-60, otherwise the reaction won't happen properly and it will never dry.If the proportion is correct, you will need to press the pieces together for just 1 minute.
After that, you just gotta wait 5 more minutes for the pieces to settle, then you can move onto gluing other pieces.
Leaving the glued pieces to fully dry overnight is suggested. In the pics you can see a deer PLA head that was printed in smaller pieces and had to be glued together. It has held perfectly for years.
Honestly you can use it for other stuff as well, just check compatibility.
We can confirm that it works wonders for repairing broken ceramics and refrigerator shelves!
Scissors
ListingsIt's hard to suggest a particular type of scissors.
The thing is, everyone's hands are different and quality may not be consistent.
Our method is to just buy any kind of scissor that feels good in your hand, then test it on all the materials we usually use.
The pic I put here is my scissor arsenal and their respective function.Grandma's trick: in a pinch, you can use tin foil to sharpen your scissors.
Must be done with caution and only after practicing on scissors you don't care about, as you gotta learn how to do it properly with the right tin foil or you will mess them up permanently.
It's also just a quick fix, so if you really care about your scissors, you should get them sharpened professionally!

Brushes
Type: Beard Brush
Listings
- Any local generalist store or Aliexpress listingGood for: short fur and facesGood in general to brush short fur (and technically minky), both for maintenance and during shaving.

Type: Slicker Brushes
Listings
- Any local generalist store or Aliexpress listingGood for: long furCommon and easy to find.
Must be used delicately on long fur only. For fursuit maintenance: buy only those with ball-tipped pins. For fursuit making: you'll also need the wire pins version in order to
[ANANAS RISCRIVILO NON CAPISCO se dovete pettinare il pelo dietro il backing per fare i capelli o essere un po' più aggressivi in fase di rasatura.]The shape of the pins will change the results on the fur.
Slicker brushes with bent pins will be more aggressive by design, ripping out a lot more fur than flat/straight pins. The more it's bent, the worse it gets.

The site's translation is kind of an issue, so if you have a char from them, here's a recommendation: only use Google's automatic translation, as the site's own translation changes product names and codes, making it impossible to find specific products if you're using the chart's info.
(Gallery has some translations to help you out if you want to order charts)
